Depleting natural resources. The thinning ozone layer. Global warming. Climate change. These are the things we hear every day from scientists, government officials, the media, and even our social media timelines. There’s no getting around it: Our misuse of the environment and overuse of appliances and technology is putting future generations at risk. Thankfully, the same technology that allows us to burn diesel fuel at an alarming rate can also be used to combat climate change.

During the summer season, when you turn on the air-conditioning system, you create fumes and burn fossil fuels. When you use the shower and the industrial water pump does its magic, you deplete the earth’s natural resources. Now, that doesn’t mean that you should never take a shower again or that you shouldn’t turn on the AC unit when the temperature is at a hundred degrees. What this means is that you should think twice before turning on the AC or taking another shower. You need to be smart about how you use the source of energy around you.

Close the Blinds

Yes, natural light should come in the house. Even during the dead of winter, natural light is great. But remember that this can turn your home into a sauna during the summer season. Open the blinds in the early morning to let light in. But once the temperature starts to rise, draw the blinds and keep the cool inside your home.

Turn off the Stove

People have a habit of leaving the stove open after they remove the pan. Is it too much to ask to turn it off even if you’re going to use it again after 10 seconds? Those 10 precious seconds will make the inside of your home feel like a sauna if you leave the fire open. Aside from the fact that this is a fire hazard, doing so will waste precious gas an make your house feel hot and humid.

Use No-heat Light Bulbs

They look innocent, but light bulbs generate a lot of heat. That’s why you need to turn off the lights when you leave a room or when you don’t need to. Switch to no-heat light bulbs, too, so that they don’t contribute to the temperature inside your home.

Choose Breezy Clothing

Rayon and polyester for the summer season? Forget about it. Choose cotton or cotton-blend clothes for summer. These breezy clothing pieces will make sure that you stay dry from the sweltering heat. Remember that your AC unit and the fans will only keep the space cool. Ultimately, it’s about how you keep yourself cool. Wear shorts instead of pants and T-shirts instead of blouses. You’ll feel more comfortable, and you’ll need less time to use the AC.

You should find all the ways of bringing down your energy bill. This isn’t just about the money. It’s about the environment, too. If people only learned to keep their electricity usage down the past decades, they wouldn’t have to face such a disastrous future of depleted natural resources and global warming.
